The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has mobilized the Supreme Court of India in a bid to seek immediate mayoral elections for the Delhi Municipal Corporation. This comes after the AAP defeated a fifteen-year Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) regime in the MCD elections that took place in December 2022.

The AAP has claimed that the BJP ‘does not allow’ them to hold the elections. The AAP has moved to the higher court demanding an immediate election of the mayor of the MCD. In its lawsuit, the AAP has also sought to bar aldermen from voting under the law.

House leader and party mayoral candidate Aam Aadmi has filed these two main lawsuits in the high court.

In a video recorded by himself, AAP chief spokesman Saurabh Bhardwaj said: “The Bharatiya Janata Party DCM’s tenure ended in March 2022. After that, the DCM came under the central government under the pretext of the unification and delimitation works. Now the people of Delhi have given majority to Aadmi Party in MCD and elected 134 AAP councillors”.

Despite that, he alleged that BJP is not allowing the Aam Aadmi Party-led local body to form in Delhi due to its “conspiracy and dirty politics”.

He added: “Despite many efforts, they are not allowing the mayoral election and the formation of the government to take place. Now the Aam Aadmi Party has gone to the Supreme Court through our House leader and mayoral candidate “.

The spokesperson appealed for the court to now complete this process as soon as possible, claiming that the Bharatiya Janata Party and the central government will not complete it.

On Tuesday, the Delhi mayoral election was postponed after the House was adjourned sine die following a riot between councilors from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The chamber was raised after President Satya Sharma said the proceedings cannot go ahead amid chants from AAP and BJP councillors.

This is the second time in a month that the Delhi mayoral election has been disrupted. On 6 January, the mayoral elections in MCD House were postponed after clashes broke out between AAP and BJP councillors.

The AAP had put forward Shelly Oberoi as their candidate for the mayoral post, while the BJP nominated Rekha Gupta. Aaley Mohammad Iqbal is the AAP Deputy Mayor candidate.
